Crowland Heritage Trail

The Crowland Heritage Trail was officially opened during June 2005 by David Blunt, Chairman of Crowland Parish Council, and the ‘Charm Tree’, designed by the children of St. Guthlacs Secondary School and South View Primary School, was unveiled.

The Heritage Trail links the Peterborough Green Wheel with a National Sustrans cycle route near Spalding and improves access to a 3km section of the Corporation Bank. The Trail, constructed by John Martin-Hoyes Ltd., used recycled material from crushed road surfaces to provide a surface for cyclists and walkers, with improved access provided down to a picnic site half way along the route.

Landscaping has also been undertaken to create reed and osier (willow) beds, along with sheltered planting in the area alongside the Trail.

The Charm Tree holds fruit ‘charms’ designed by pupils at St. Guthlacs Secondary School and South View Primary School to show what, in their view, makes Crowland special and distinctive. This project was run by Arts NK, who have also worked with other local community groups to develop the Heritage Trail.

In November 2002, funding was secured through the European Regional Development Fund and Lincolnshire County Council, along with several other partners, by the Environment Agency, to provide recreational facilities and improvements along the proposed route of the Fens Waterways Link, in Lincolnshire.

The Trail also attracted funding from South Holland District Council and Peterborough City Council, with significant support from Crowland Parish Council.
