Access Improvements

Providing safe and easy to use access routes along the rivers is vital to encourage people to explore the countryside.

Nearly 18km of riverside bank has seen improvements to footpath access. Various access gates have been provided along the River Welland, between Crowland and Spalding, and along the South Forty Foot Drain, between Swineshead Bridge and Boston, to replace existing stiles and improve access along the river bank. C G Godfrey Ltd. has undertaken this work, along with improvements to the bridleway access along the South Forty Foot Drain, around another 18km of improvements. These gates are specially designed to close on their own to prevent the movement of farm animals on these heavily grazed banks and have been installed with easy to use, stock-proof latches.

In November 2002, funding was secured through the European Regional Development Fund and Lincolnshire County Council, along with several other partners, by the Environment Agency, to provide recreational facilities and improvements along the proposed route of the Fens Waterways Link, in Lincolnshire.
